Bacanora is some 300 or more years old, however it is less well known than other agave spirits as it had to survive close to 100 years of prohibition. The prohibition was spirit specific to the production and consumption of Bacanora.
Not only was prohibition severely enforced, it was not eased until the early 1990s with legal production not being encouraged until the 2000s. In fact, in the year 2000, it received its DO (Denomination of Origin). To be Bacanora, it has to be produced in one of the 35 municipalities of Sonora that are within the DO territory
